I was sitting in an Airbnb in an unfamiliar city and state, waiting on pins and needles for updates from our son’s birth mother. Designing this quilt helped pass the time, and for that I will always be grateful.
Half square triangles are one of the most popular quilt blocks, for good reason! The diagonal movement they provide is so eye catching. In addition, half square triangles look harder to construct than they really are.
half square triangle frequently asked questions:
How to make half square triangles in quilting: As stated above, half square triangles look much harder than they actually are. As its name suggests, half square triangles are actually square blocks! The other half triangle is the cream (background) color, which lets the color triangles really pop!
The Odyssey quilt pattern includes easy to follow, full color instructions on how to assemble half square triangles blocks using the 8-at-a-time method (also known as the “magic 8 method”.
How to cut half square triangles for quilting: this is a great question! Some half square triangle instructions have the finished unit be the exact size needed for the project. This saves some time, but leaves very little room for error.

Mistletoe Quilting Co. quilted this using some lavender thread and a serpent-like design to really pull everything together. It is stunning!
For the binding, RSS speckled was a clear winner. This quilt is officially now in heavy rotation at our house, which means plenty of opportunities to touch (fabric) snakes.

A party in the quilt back
Piecing an interesting quilt back is something that never sounds fun at the time, but it always pays off in the end. This baby Odyssey is no exception. Leftover half square triangle blocks were pieced into the back, along with random bits of extra fabric. The result is so cool!
Walk by Jackie Gering is the ultimate guide to quilting different designs with a domestic sewing machine and walking foot. Most designs look much more complicated than they really are, and the results are always stunning.
The boomerang design was used for this quilt, which gives the quilt great texture without competing with the quilt design.
