Marcella and Mae Quilts: All The Details

The Marcella and Mae quilt patterns can both be found in the Wren Collective pattern shop.

In preparation of their pattern release, I made four, yes four, throw size Marcella and Mae quilts.. I also decided to make a baby sized Mae.

You can find photos of all of those Marcella and Mae quilts below to help get ideas churning to make your own. I have also made posts with photos of the Mae pattern tester versions as well as the Marcella pattern tester versions.

Rainbow Marcella - for Wren

This version of Marcella is filled with fun and color. It is being gifted to our five year old daughter, Wren, and she loves all things color! She says this version reminds her of candy clouds.

Linli of Lamb and Loom fabrics has bundles available to make a version inspired by the version above.

The confetti speckled fabric from Ruby Star Society is the perfect background for any quilt with a lot of color. I can't wait to use this background fabric again!

Sarah from Stitch Mode Quilts did the most amazing work on this Marcella quilt. It is super whimsical, which matches the colors and design perfectly!

Marcella combines simple plus blocks with simple drunkard's path, or curved, blocks. The drunkard's path blocks in this pattern are designed to be oversized. This allows for accurate trimming, even if the curve blocks come out a little "wonky" after sewing.

Mae Quilt - Cover Version

This version of the Mae quilt is a good mix of textures and colors. I love mixing woven cotton fabric in with quilter's cotton; the texture of woven cannot be beat! Not only does it look beautiful, but it feels so incredibly cozy!

Mae utilizes half square triangles in place of the curved blocks that Marcella has. This is a great option for those beginner quilters or quilters who are unsure about curves.

Stitch Mode Quilts also did the quilting on this Mae Quilt. Sarah is such a professional!

Lamb and Loom has kits available to make a version similar to this quilt, so be sure to check her out!

This version is probably my most favorite of all of the versions I have made. Not only are the colors so comforting to me, but the feel and drape of this quilt is unparalleled. It truly is the softest quilt I've ever made.

I chose to do a variation on the pattern for this version, and the instructions for that variation can be found HERE.

Sarah (Stitch Mode Quilts) also did the quilting for this Mae. She did such incredible work! This pantograph is probably my all time favorite. I can't wait to have her quilt this panto again in the future!

Does anyone else have a quilt ladder for the sole purpose of taking quilt photos? I hope that I'm not alone in this.

The Gingham Marcella

This Marcella quilt has a heavy dose of gingham, but I love it! The black and white gingham binding on this Marcella quilt is my favorite aspect.

Vintage Stitch by Jenae did the quilting on this version. I love how the leaves of the quilting design mimics the leaves on the backing fabric.

BABY MAE

My husband and I are set to adopt a little boy here in a few weeks, so naturally he needs a trillion and one quilts. I love this palette so much that I am planning on a throw size for myself!

Andrea over at Cottoneer is kitting some fabric to make a version inspired by this baby version.

Whew! If you're still here, a virtual elbow bump to you. I hope you've enjoyed seeing these Marcella and Mae quilts as much as I enjoyed making them.

If you make your own, please share on social media using the hashtags #themarcellaquilt #themaequilt #wrencollectivepatterns. I would love to see your creations!

Until next time,

XOXO Rach

Can you use fabric from jelly rolls to make the plus sign looking blocks?

      Hi Rae,

Yes, you could use jelly rolls for the plus sign blocks. Hope this helps!

Hey there!

Rachel from Wren Collective

Welcome to Wren Collective. I’m so excited that you decided to stop by! I am a modern quilter based in Omaha, Nebraska. Besides quilting, I enjoy family movie nights, reading mystery novels, and waking up early to a quiet house. In my spare time, you can usually find me microwaving coffee from earlier in the morning and lint rolling thread off of my pants.
