(A huge thank you to my friend, Autumn Waldman Photography, for snapping these photos quick in the sushi restaurant parking lot as we waited for our table.) I'm sure people driving by were wondering what the heck we were doing with a quilt on a hot summer day!

Why have a variation of aftershock?
The Aftershock quilt pattern includes instructions for both a multi-color and a two-color version. The multi-color version uses seven fat quarters, so each color is two rows in the quilt.
This modified rainbow quilt uses 14 different colors, so each row is its own color. Originally this modification was written into the pattern as a third variation, but it made the pattern pretty wordy and hard to follow. So, this tutorial lives here on the blog for you!
How this variation differs from the original aftershock
Whereas the original Aftershock is fat quarter friendly, this modified version is fat eighth friendly. Use the cutting chart below for each of the 14 color fat eighths. As a reminder, a fat eighth, or FE, is a pre-cut piece of fabric that measures approximately 9" x 21."
Making your own FE from ¼ yard cuts is very simple; reference the graphic below.
As stated above, use the cutting chart below when cutting all of the 14 color pieces. All background cutting and all block assembly instructions remain the same as the pattern states.
When you get to the quilt assembly part of the Aftershock pattern, the general layout remains the same, just know that you will be laying it out so that each row is a different color/fabric.
ABOUT THIS RAINBOW QUILT VARIATION
This Aftershock was made with 14 speckled fabrics, designed by Rashida Coleman-Hale of Ruby Star Society for Moda Fabrics. A creamy tonal speckled even makes up the background!
The backing for this quilt is one of my all time favorite RSS prints from the Social line by Melody Miller. The rotary telephones paired with the rainbows just take me straight back to growing up in the late 80s.
Thanks for stopping by!
I can't wait to see your own Aftershock quilt, whether it be this 14 FE modification or the normal 7 FQ version. (Or the two-color version as well!)
